Still home. Still safe. Still kicking.

stillKicking is a picture frame that quietly monitors daily movement — helping your loved ones stay safe, independent, and in the home they love.

Mom is active today

Aging is a series of transitions, and some of them can be difficult. One of the most difficult transition is needing to move out of ones home. But it's not always a smooth or obvious decision, and it's a highly emotional one as well.

I created moveOmeter as a way to help elderly people stay in their home a bit longer and a bit safer by including the caretaker in a bit more of their day to day lives as non-invasively as possible. For my own mother I wanted to be able to answer the question: Is she ok today? It is a delicate balance between respecting her autonomy and assuring the rest of her family.

I wanted to make something that was privacy focused (no camera's or microphones) just a passive human presence sensor. I have dedicated my life to building open source products, so open source was crucial.

If you are interested, I am collecting emails and will notify you when it is ready. I have been testing it in my house and it is working nicely and am building the first 5 units now.

moveOmeter is a picture frame that detects human presence and motion and sends a summary of daily movement to an app on your phone. You can set alerts such as fall detection or oversleeping. Daily reports are created as well as ongoing reports on long term changes in mobility. Small nightlights or additional picture frames can be put in additional rooms to add more rooms.

I am also developing sleepOmeter. It will go next to or under your aging parents bed and keep track of their sleep quality. I haven't tested this enough, but will be doing so once moveOmeter is in beta testing.

The main picture frame will have a cellular modem, so there is no dependency on an existing internet connection, and no setup needed on a local network. Take the frame out of the box, plug it in, and it is working. Any nightlight motion sensors or the sleepOmeter will automatically connect to the main picture frame for uploading data to our servers.

Data and alerts can be made via moveOmeter.com as well as the iPhone and Android apps I am creating.

📷

moveOmeter works by using a Human Presence sensor that sends our a single number for how much movement is happening. This is averaged into 5 minute chunks of data and sent to the server where it is compiled and distributed to the caretakers app. Caretakers can set alerts for events such as falling and time ranges for motion detecting.

If you purchase the moveOmeters there is a monthly fee of $20/month. This is included if you choose to rent, which is about $75/month.

moveOmeter was designed for aging seniors and their caretakers to navigate the benefits and concerns with staying in ones home safely. moveOmeter is meant to aid in those life transitions and decisions and to help maintain the relationship between the caretaker and the aging senior.

moveOmeter was designed by John Reine. That's me, a real human. I am an Electrical Engineer who built this for my own personal use with my family, and want to make it available to everyone. I have dedicated my life to making open source products, so moveOmeter will be open source, but for non-commercial purposes. I want it to feel like buying a radio in 1945.

Before this I was a Senior Engineer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, before that I made video games, and before that after college I made one of the first MP3 players and started a company with my college roomate around it. I am doing this to somewhat fund the open source oceanographic sensors and robots I want to make, and somewhat to make a living where I can work from home and run a company how I would like it to be run. Here are my values:

1. Open source hardware and software, with a license for non-commercial use. The hardware is licensed according to the Cern Open Hardware License (OHL) v2, and the Software is licensed with the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPLv3). I want anyone to be able to download the schematic, add something, make a new picture frame, make new night lights. I want to build a community around customizing and adding features together.

2. I refuse to work for the military or defense. A lot of the job offerings are in that field, and a decent part of the oceanography market is supported by military funded contracts and research.

3. I started a consumer electronics company when I was 21 with my college roomate and we grew it to $10M annual revenue. I have made all the mistakes. My goal is to have a simple company that excells at customer support, customer interaction, transparency. I will make this into a Public Benefit Corporation, which will have a specific charter of providing aids to people to help them in their lives at fair prices. I also aim to have transparent book keeping so customers know where the money is going.

4. For me, business is always personal. I enjoy making long term connections with customers and makeing tools to help them through difficult life transitions. Let's talk anytime about my ideas for the ultimate speakerphone.

If you have any feedback or comments please contact me here. I'd be happy to meet with anyone to discuss moveOmeter either on zoom or facetime or a simple phone call, just schedule a 15 minute call here.

As of early March in 2026 I am building the first 5 units for beta testing. I am expecting to be able to start shipping these in the summer of 2026.

I live on Cape Cod and will be working with local technicians to assemble and ship these.

If you sign up for email updates or have questions I'll send out periodic progress updates.

Why stillKicking

Independence shouldn't mean uncertainty

Families face a difficult choice: restrict a loved one's freedom, or worry constantly. We built a third option.

💔

The worry that never stops

Millions of families spend their days wondering: "Is Mom okay? Did Dad get up this morning? Should I call again?" That constant low-grade anxiety takes a toll on everyone.

🏠

Leaving home too soon

Every year, older adults move into care facilities not because they need to — but because their families can't monitor safety from afar. It doesn't have to be that way.

💛

Quiet confidence, daily

stillKicking detects natural movement patterns throughout the day. No check-in calls needed — you'll know things are normal, or be gently alerted if they're not.

🎨

A frame, not a gadget

It doesn't look like a medical device because it isn't one. It's a real picture frame displaying real family photos — with invisible sensing technology built in.

Simple Setup

Three steps to peace of mind

No technician needed. No complicated apps. Just a beautiful frame that quietly takes care of the rest.

1

Place the Frame

Set stillKicking in a living area — the kitchen counter, a bookshelf, the mantel. Wherever your loved one spends their day.

2

It Learns the Rhythm

Over the first week, the frame quietly learns your loved one's natural movement patterns. No cameras, no microphones — just motion sensing.

3

Stay Connected

Get a simple daily summary or instant alerts if something seems off. Check in on the app anytime for a quick "all is well" confirmation.
